During the one week study, the group had visited local fishermen, Penang State Fishery Department, Fishery Research Institute, Fishermen Association, NGOs, environmental leader and the World Fish Centre.

The International Biodiveristy Day Symposium 2008 will be held on May 22 at the United Nations University Headquaters in Tokyo. Focusing on the theme “Biodiversity and its interdependence with agricutlure, food and satoyama”, the symposium will provide an opportunity to enhance understanding of biodiversity through a keynote presentation and panel discussion by administrators, reseachers and practitioners in this field.
The symposium is organized by UNU, UNU-IAS, the Global Environment Information Centre (GEIC), the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan.
This symposium will be held in Japanese with no interpretation available.

This symposium is organized by the Embassy of Sweden in Japan, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and UNU with the support of the Swdish Institute, the Natural Step Japan and Volvo.

GEIC has conducted an expert workshop on the initiation of the Global Risk project that focus on the community-based climate change adaptation. The main objective of this workshop was to identify the role of community in climate change adaptation, their importance and resources available for implementation. This workshop was participated by the expert from various fields including JICA, IDE-JETRO, university researchers, UNU, etc.

May 22 is celebrated annually by the United Nations as “International Day for Biological Diversity” to draw attention to the importance of biological diversity and its contributions to sustainable human development. The focus this year is on “Biodiversity and Climate Change”.
On the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity 2007, UNU-IAS, MOEJ and GEIC will hold a seminar that brings together high-level policy makers, such as the heads of UN agencies dealing with biological diversity (UN Convention on Biological Diversity) and climate change (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change), as well as representatives other UN agencies in Japan, the Ministry of the Environment, non-governmental organizations, media and the private sector.

Mr Shimpei Iwasaki is the Master student in Kyoto University. He has participated in the UNU Internship Program in 2005, and he has been assigned under GEIC. Mr Iwasaki has conducted his study in Chilika Lagoon, Orissa State in India. He is going to present his study results entitled "Sustainable Regional Development in the Catchment of Chilika Lagoon, Orissa State, India" in the UNU ESD Meeting in March.

Global Environment Information Centre (GEIC) is celebrating its 10th anniversary in October 2006. In the last ten years, there have been significant changes in the environmental partnership dimension. The GEIC as the supporting center for environmental partnership activities should adjusted in line with the present development. By taking the chance of celebrating our 10th anniversary, GEIC is organizing the GEIC 10th Anniversary Symposium, co-organized by the United Nations University, and the Ministry of Environment, Japan. We would like to invite the government institutions, academics, NGO/NPOs, and other parties who are interested in environmental partnership to discuss the key challenges, opportunities and future actions for a better environmental partnership for the sustainable development.

The Brainstorming Meeting on Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) and the Role of Communities was held at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Bangkok, Thailand on 12 and 13 October 2006. The meeting aimed to:
1) stock take and exchange information on existing and past initiatives, relating to the effective implementation of MEAs at the community level;
2) identify key challenges related to effective MEA implementation at the local level, the active engagement of communities, as well as issues to be focused in proposed case studies;
3) identify effective approaches and support mechanisms to address the identified challenges; and
4) discuss and agree on modalities of the project, including the development of a work plan and the role of organizations involved in the project.

In February 2006, the UNU Centre and UNU-IAS, with the collaboration of the MOE, Japan organized a UNU Public Forum to discuss the concept and application of "inter-linkages" to achieve the goals of sustainable development and the conservation of the planet's natural resources for future generations.

In order to build upon the results of the Brainstorming Workshop on the Development of a Regional Partnership for Integrated Capacity Building for MEAs in South Asia , held in Dambulla, Sri Lanka from 28 June to 1 July 2004, a regional workshop was organized by the UNU and SACEP, with support from the Ministry of Environment, Japan. Government representatives from nine countries in the region (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka), as well as experts from international and regional organizations, NGOs and academic institutions attended the event, and shared their experience in managing MEAs and conducting NCSAs. The participants also presented on various on-going capacity development initiatives related to MEAs, and adopted recommendations and action plans to build regional partnership to promote coordinated capacity development in South Asia. One of the key outcomes of the workshop is a proposal to establish a regional network of Centers of Excellence on MEAs.
