GEIC published new report on Global Risk. The research report entitled "The effectiveness of community-based adaptation (CBA) to Climate Change – From the viewpoint of social capital and indigenous knowledge" is focus on the effective countermeasures (adaptation) for climate change and other environmental problems at the community level in developing countries in Asia/Pacific Region from the viewpoint of social capital and indigenous knowledge. It examines the roles of stakeholders such as local communities and local governments in climate change adaptation in development assistance projects, and exploring the possibility of fusing indigenous knowledge with the latest technologies in considering the social capital.

GEIC ESD Sourcebook aims to promote ESD activities in the field by providing easily understandable resources for ESD activities. It is a collection of figures, tables, photos and clip arts with a brief note. Users can use individual images alone and/or use them with the notes.

GEIC published two new publications on Innovative Communities. The research report entitled "Sustainability in Penangite Accent" is focus on the environmental NGO development in Penang, Malaysia. The second working paper entitled "Analysis of Six Factors of the Innovative Communities by Social Capital: Solid waste reduction in Nagoya and structural/cognitive social capital" discuss the fostering conditions for efficient communal natural resource management from the perspective of social capital.

The call for proposals for the 2009 APFED Showcase Programme is to be launched on 9 March 2009. The Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED) is a regional group of eminent experts launched at the ECOASIA (Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific) in 2001 with the support of the Ministry of the Environment, Japan. The APFED steers in its phase II the Showcase Programme as one of its programmes to support the experimentation of policy measures and actions recommended by the APFED Final Report of 2004.
The APFED Secretariat, serviced by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), and the Showcase Facility Secretariat serviced by the United Nations Environment Programme’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP/ROAP) invite organisations and stakeholder groups to submit proposals for the 2009 APFED Showcase Programme

GEIC published the latest working paper entitled “Innovative Climate Change Communication – Team Minus 6%”.
This working paper is highlighting the importance of effective communication strategies to increase the public awareness on climate change issues. The study was focused basically on the climate change campaign strategies at developed countries, in particularly Japanese “Team Minus 6%” campaign. Successful climate change campaign is attributed to its communication strategies and attractive content. The lesson learned from successful campaign can help to duplicate the experience at other part of the world. This paper will be useful for government, private corporation, NGO/ NPOs etc. at both developed and developing countries to implement effective climate change communication strategies.

GEIC has prepared the Environmental Funding Database that consists of 61 different funding and supporting sources for the environmental related activities. This environmental funding information database consists of two categories, the funds for project implementation and the funds for research activities. We hope the database will provide the local communities with more opportunities to conserve their local and regional environment.

Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia will be introducing a new "STOP! Global Warming"Competition. Global Warming is a serious problem that affects the world we live in. To commemorate their 10th anniversary, Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2008, along with Team-6% Committee (Ministry of the Environment) will start accepting short film submissions with the theme of "STOP! Global Warming" from around the world.

The official launch of the fourth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-4), which is the most comprehenvive United Nations assessment reoprt on environment, will take place in 40 cities around the world. In Tokyo, which is one of the sites of launching in Asia and the Pacific region, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) will organize a symposium as mentioned below.
The Global Environment Outlook (GEO): environment for development report is the culmination of five years of intensive consultation with stakeholders in all regions of the world. It links findings on the state of the environment with policy analyses, incorporating historical, current and future perspectives, combining global perspectives with sub-global views. GEO-4 also highlights emerging environmental issues that require policy attention. The GEO-4 assessment has used the 1987 report – Our Common Future – of the World Commission on Environment and Development as the baseline for the retrospective analysis of environmental trends and development in the past 20 years. It highlights both environment and development issues, focusing on human well-being and role of environment in development.

Winners of the United Nations Environment Programme Sasakawa Prize 2007 Announced
Ms. Jeunesse Park of South Africa and Bangladeshi NGO Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha are the co-winners of the UNEP Sasakawa Prize 2007, a $200,000 prize awarded yearly to individuals or institutions who have made a substantial contribution to the protection and management of the environment.
The award ceremony will be held on 27 October 2007 at the Museum of Natural History, Rose Center for Earth and Space, in New York, USA.

United Nations Secretary-General’s High-Level Event on Climate Change
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced that he will convene an informal high-level event in New York on the margins of the General Assembly on 24 September to promote discussion on possible ways to move the international community toward negotiations on new global agreement on climate change at the upcoming United Nations climate change conference in Bali in December.

60th Annual DPI/NGO Conference: “Climate Change: How It Impacts Us All”
The 60th Annual DPI/NGO Conference will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 5 to 7 September 2007. More than 2,000 representatives of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) from over 80 countries are expected to attend roundtables, panels and workshops during the 3-day event. The Conference will review the scientific evidence on climate change, including its consequences on indigenous peoples, water security, land use and the politics of energy.
Organised by the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) in collaboration with the NGO/DPI Executive Committee, the Conference aims to facilitate individual action plans that address the threat of catastrophe posed by climate change and inspire participants to take action to mitigate - and in some cases - reverse the effects of this environmental crisis.

In February 2006, the UNU Centre and UNU-IAS, with the collaboration of the MOE, Japan organized a UNU Public Forum to discuss the concept and application of "inter-linkages" to achieve the goals of sustainable development and the conservation of the planet's natural resources for future generations.

The UNU and SACEP, with support from the Ministry of Environment, Japan, organized the Regional Workshop on the Development of a Regional Partnership for Integrated Capacity Building for MEAs in South Asia in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 14 to 16 February 2005. Government representatives from nine countries in the region (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka), as well as experts from international and regional organizations, NGOs and academic institutions attended the event, and shared their experience in managing MEAs and conducting NCSAs. The participants also presented on various on-going capacity development initiatives related to MEAs, and adopted recommendations and action plans to build regional partnership to promote coordinated capacity development in South Asia. One of the key outcomes of the workshop is a proposal to establish a regional network of Centers of Excellence on MEAs.

A report on Existing Capacity Development Initiatives and Clearing House Mechanisms on MEAs in South Asia, prepared by the UNU Inter-linkages Initiative is now available for download. The report provides with an overview of existing projects, mechanisms and tools used by countries in South Asia, in promoting synergistic management of MEAs in the region.
