This workshop was a collaborative initiative of UNEP, South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD) and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Sri Lanka. The workshop aimed at building negotiation skills of government officials of nine SACEP member countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka). The Inter-linkages Initiative was invited to present the results of national case studies conducted in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly on national experiences related to the implementation of MEAs. The UNU has been collaborating with UNEP and other international and regional partners to conduct similar training workshops in Southeast Asia and the Pacific region.

In close collaboration with the Malaysian Government, the Malaysian Global Environment Center, DANIDA and UNEP, UNU was strongly involved in developing the curriculum for a 2-week training course for government officials.

Based on the recognized importance of sustainable tourism management and an integrated approach for cultural and natural heritage conservation, the UNESCO, UNU and University of Peradeniya and other partners in the region organized the training programme on “Linking Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Tourism at World Heritage Sites: Exploring the Links between Economic Instruments, Conservation of Natural and Cultural Heritage and Biodiversity Protection". The workshop was attended by representatives from nine countries in the region (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Iran), and experts working on the management of World Heritage sites, nature conservation and sustainable tourism. The event was supported financially by the ACCU.

The training workshop focused on the role of regional frameworks to promote environmental governance and sustainable development. Regional systems for environmental management are essential components of global environmental governance through complementing governance efforts at the national and the global levels.
